10 JUL 2022 Gold Star Regatta Chicago

Sunday 10 JUL 2022 was a beautiful day for racing and honoring Chicago’s first responders and our Gold Star Families who’ve made the ultimate sacrifice for us. The event started with a blessing and prayer service underneath Columbia Yacht Club's flag pole which was led by Police Officer Kimberly Davis of the Chicago Police Chaplain Ministry along with stirring bag-pipe presentation provided by Sergeant Brian Bader. Honor guard was presented by Mounted Patrol Unit Officers Jose Pedraza and MPO Marcus Davis. MPO's respectively were mounted on horse “Soderberg” (Officer Thor Soderberg #14767 killed in the line of duty 07 July 2010 ) and horse “Brandon” (Officer Dorelle C. Brandon #2684 first female killed in the line of duty 25 Jan 1984 ). Following the prayer service the fleet of participating racing boats was escorted from Monroe Harbor to the starting area by Chicago Police Marine Unit M2 crewed by Lieutenant Jose Mendez, Sergeant Mark Walsh, MO Kevin Hitney, MO Matt Lotito, MO Joe Doane and MO Aaromn Thomas. The race started with a light East wind that slowly filled in during the race. The first mark for both the JAM and Spinnaker fleets was the four mile crib with the JAM fleet continuing to the Harrison crib and the Spinnaker fleet to the Wilson Ave. crib before both fleets returning to the finish at the starting area.

Line honors for the JAM fleet was taken by Lanakila who finished the 6.5 N. Mi JAM course in 1 hour and 56 minutes and Fleetwood for the spinnaker fleet who finished the 12.6 N. Mi. Spinnaker course in 2 hours and 2 minutes.
